Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager. The Spaniard has agreed to a four-year deal, which will commence on July 1st.

Alonso, 44, becomes the fifth permanent manager under Chelsea’s current ownership, BlueCo, since their acquisition of the club. He was available after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Real Madrid in January.

This appointment marks a return to English football for Alonso, who previously had a significant playing career in the Premier League with Liverpool. He made 210 appearances for the Reds before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso stated. “From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

Alonso inherits a Chelsea side that has faced a challenging season, currently sitting ninth in the Premier League and with limited chances of European qualification. The team also recently lost the FA Cup final.
