The annual Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations, typically held on June 3rd at the Namugongo Shrines, have been postponed by President Yoweri Museveni. This decision comes as a precautionary measure against the increasing threat of the Ebola virus.

President Museveni stated that the postponement is crucial because of the thousands of pilgrims who travel to Uganda from Eastern Congo, an area currently grappling with an Ebola outbreak. The health and safety of all citizens and visitors were cited as the primary reasons for this difficult decision.

The announcement aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of the current Ebola outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported a significant number of deaths and suspected cases, with the Ministry of Health in Uganda confirming cases in Kampala linked to travel from the DRC.

President Museveni has urged all individuals who had already begun their pilgrimage to Namugongo to turn back and return home. He stressed the importance of adhering to precautionary measures and reporting any signs of illness, underscoring that the protection of life is paramount.

This is not the first time the Martyrs’ Day celebrations have been impacted by public health concerns. Similar disruptions occurred in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to virtual and scaled-down observances.
