Shem Bajura Bageine’s recently launched memoir, “Foresight,” offers a compelling look at a life intertwined with Uganda’s modern history. Born in 1944 in Kigezi, Bageine’s early life was shaped by subsistence farming and entrepreneurial ventures, showcasing a keen business acumen from a young age.

His academic journey saw him excel at Kigezi High School and Kigezi College Butobere, later pursuing Chartered Surveying and Land Economics at the University of East Africa, Nairobi. This educational foundation paved the way for a successful career in property, co-founding Bageine, Karanja and Mbuu Valuers, Surveyors and Estate Managers, a respected firm in East Africa.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bageine played a significant role in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) External Wing, serving as Treasurer and mobilizing crucial support during the liberation struggle. His memoir details firsthand accounts of assisting fighters and facilitating key meetings with international figures.

Following the return of peace, Bageine transitioned into public service, serving as a Member of Parliament, a Constituent Assembly member, and Minister of State for East African Affairs. His life has not been without peril, having survived an assassination attempt.

A profound challenge emerged in 2007 when Bageine was diagnosed with macular degeneration, leading to gradual vision loss. Yet, this did not deter him; the memoir itself is a testament to his extraordinary resilience and determination, completed despite his visual impairment.

The book also highlights Bageine’s dedication to his family, his philanthropic efforts in education, and his long-standing commitment to service through Lions Clubs International. “Foresight” is described as a vivid account of entrepreneurship, patriotism, public service, and perseverance, offering insights into Uganda’s political landscape and the growth of the East African business community.

The memoir, published on May 7, 2026, is available in most bookshops and is recommended for entrepreneurs, students, public servants, and anyone interested in the individuals who have shaped contemporary Uganda. It underscores the lasting impact of a life dedicated to vision, hard work, and service.
