Felicien Kabuga, a key suspect in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, has died while in the custody of a UN court in The Hague. He was 93 years old.
Kabuga was apprehended in France in May 2020, concluding a manhunt that lasted over two decades. He was subsequently extradited to The Hague.
However, a determination was made that Kabuga was unfit to stand trial due to dementia. He was also deemed too unwell to be transferred back to Rwanda for legal proceedings.
With no nation willing to host him, Kabuga remained at the UN detention center in The Hague. The court has announced that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death has been ordered.
Kabuga, a former businessman and owner of the radio station Radio Television Libre des Mille Collines, was among the final fugitives sought in connection with the genocide. During the horrific 100-day period, Hutu extremists were responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
Prosecutors had accused Kabuga of inciting hatred through his radio broadcasts and of aiding in the arming of ethnic Hutu militias.
The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, which manages residual cases from former UN tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, announced his death.
