Nearly 48,000 candidates are set to participate in the May/June 2026 assessment series conducted by the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB). The exams, commencing Monday, May 18th, cover a range of vocational and technical programs including Technology, Business, Home Science, and Agriculture Education and Training.

Dr. Wilfred Nahamya, UVTAB’s Deputy Executive Secretary for Assessment, emphasized that all examination center heads must prominently display the severe consequences of malpractice to both candidates and invigilators. The Board issued a stern warning, stating that any involvement in cheating will attract significant penalties as outlined in the TVET Act.

The TVET Act defines assessment malpractice as any act intended to cheat, facilitate cheating, or gain an unfair advantage. Punishments range from the cancellation of results to substantial fines and imprisonment.

Of the 47,774 candidates registered across 544 centers nationwide, 23,281 are female and 24,493 are male. Special provisions have been made for 165 students with special needs, including support personnel like sign language interpreters, transcribers, guides, and extra time during the assessment period.

UVTAB highlighted a growing trend of students choosing vocational education for self-reliance and job creation. Ms. Jalia Nasaza, Deputy Executive Secretary for Curriculum Development, noted a shift towards employer-led, competency-based training to combat youth unemployment. The board is actively revising its curriculum in collaboration with industry experts to ensure training aligns with current workplace demands.
