Supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Masaka are celebrating the release of their local Member of Parliament, Justine Nameere. The Masaka City Woman MP was apprehended by plain-clothed security operatives on Friday night.
Her husband, Hamza Nsubuga, confirmed her release on Saturday night, stating that she is now home and preparing to resume her planned activities. She is expected to attend a church function in Masaka City on Sunday.
Nameere’s arrest occurred as she was traveling in a convoy to meet supporters celebrating her swearing-in. The arrest drew sharp criticism from leaders of the Uganda Law Society in Masaka, who condemned the manner of her detention and demanded her unconditional release. Her lawyer, Sam Ssekyewa, also denounced the arrest as “brutal,” calling for disclosure of the reasons behind her abduction.
Despite the controversy surrounding her arrest, Nameere’s supporters expressed delight at her return. They are hopeful that she will now focus on her duties and contribute to the city’s development. “We are happy that our leader is finally out of detention and back in the city. We hope she is going to start working for us now that she already took the oath to serve us,” said Ashiraf Lubinga, one of her supporters. Another supporter, Yahaya Muzeyi, thanked God for her unconditional release, stating that she can now concentrate on serving her constituents without undue worries.
Efforts to reach MP Nameere for a personal comment were unsuccessful as she could not be reached on her mobile phone.
