The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has officially launched an investigation into the wealth and conduct of the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among. This move follows mounting local and international pressure concerning allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, and money laundering, reportedly linked to parliamentary spending and her accumulating assets.

The announcement by IGG Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala on Friday has elicited diverse reactions from the public. While some commentators welcome the scrutiny, urging its extension to other government officials, others perceive it as politically motivated, potentially stemming from disagreements over the speakership race.

Isaac Ssemakadde, president of the Uganda Law Society, noted that while Speaker Among is not without fault, the timing of the investigations, coinciding with her bid for re-election, raises questions about selective enforcement rather than genuine reform. He cautioned against the “weaponisation of state power” through public raids, which risk violating due process.

Lawyer Paul Kenneth Kakande and NUP officials have suggested the situation reflects a broader trend of political abandonment within the system, where loyalty can be disregarded when interests shift. Conversely, others like lawyer Tom Ngobi advocate for a comprehensive, across-the-board anti-corruption crackdown, arguing that the issue is systemic and not confined to any single individual.

The IGG’s investigation reportedly targets asset ownership, offshore accounts, luxury acquisitions, and possible abuse of office. This intensified scrutiny follows sanctions previously imposed on Speaker Among by the United States and the United Kingdom over corruption allegations, and a directive from President Museveni in July 2025 for investigations into parliamentary financial networks.

Recent reports of Speaker Among airlifting a luxury Rolls-Royce vehicle at a significant cost have further fueled public debate. Security forces were also observed conducting a search at her residence in Nakasero, intensifying the focus on her financial dealings and official conduct.

This unfolding situation paints a stark picture of the challenges facing governance and accountability in Uganda, with the public keenly observing the process and its implications for the fight against corruption. Uganda Online will continue to follow this developing story.
