The race for the Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament is reportedly facing significant shifts, with incumbent Anita Among facing pressure due to recent corruption allegations and scrutiny.
Two high-level meetings held recently, one at State House, Entebbe, involving ministers, and another exclusive to the first family at State House, Nakasero, have reportedly concluded that Among’s continued tenure as Speaker presents unfavorable optics.
This situation arises amid growing criticism regarding the Speaker’s spending and display of wealth, which critics argue overshadows her use of incumbency. President Museveni’s recent emphasis on a zero-tolerance stance against corruption, coupled with the public image cultivated by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as an anti-corruption advocate, appears to be influencing political calculations.
Adding to the pressure, the Inspectorate of Government (IG) has confirmed it is investigating Speaker Among following a petition by lawyers and activists. The petition accuses her of possible breaches of the Leadership Code Act, prompting the ombudsman to initiate an inquiry into her declared assets, lifestyle, and wealth sources.
The investigation into Among’s considerable assets, including luxury vehicles and properties, comes as the nation grapples with economic hardships. Accountability advocates argue that such conspicuous wealth displays by public officials risk eroding public trust.
Political analysts suggest that the investigations and endorsements, such as Gen Muhoozi’s backing of Jacob Oboth-Oboth, signal a strategic recalibration within the ruling NRM party. While Among remains influential among MPs, her path to retaining the Speakership may become politically challenging.
The unfolding competition for the Speakership is increasingly seen as intertwined with broader discussions about leadership transition, power realignments, and the future direction of Uganda’s political landscape, serving as a bargaining chip in high-stakes political negotiations.
