The championship match of the Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership is set to be an intense showdown between Thunderbirds and Nile Rapids. However, the league’s climax is overshadowed by significant player absences as numerous athletes have been summoned for the Lady Rugby Cranes’ preparations for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Performance Division.
Adding to the disruption, the Avengers club has withdrawn from the league due to financial issues and a depleted squad caused by national team call-ups. This follows the earlier withdrawal of Black Pearls, leaving the premiership with only two active teams for the final rounds.
Nile Rapids, making their mark in their second league season, have risen to the top of the table. They face Thunderbirds in a crucial match where a draw would secure them their maiden league title. Rapids coach Ronald Odakai acknowledged the challenge of missing key players but expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.
Thunderbirds will also be without six key players. The match, scheduled for Kyadondo Rugby Grounds, will determine the league champions.
