Soroti Regional Referral Hospital is facing a significant operational challenge after an electrical fault shut down its main theatre. The problem, attributed to aging infrastructure dating back to the 1940s, has led to the temporary relocation of critical surgical services.
As a result, at least 46 mothers requiring Caesarean sections have been transferred to Princess Diana Health Centre IV for their operations. Following surgery, these mothers are then transported back to Soroti Referral Hospital for post-operative care, straining already limited bed capacity.
Health officials explained that Princess Diana Health Centre IV lacks the space for extended recovery, forcing a quick turnaround for patients. This arrangement requires daily fueling of ambulances to transport medical staff, surgical equipment, and patients between the two facilities.
While emergency maternity services remain functional, the situation has placed considerable strain on transport and staffing resources. Families are also facing added logistical and financial burdens due to the complex transfer process.
Hospital administration is working on repairs to restore normal operations at the main theatre as soon as possible, with an appeal for a modern theatre block to prevent future occurrences.
