Manchester City added another trophy to their cabinet on Saturday, clinching the FA Cup with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the final.
Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo proved to be the match-winner, executing a brilliant turn and back-heel finish in the 72nd minute past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. The assist came from Erling Haaland, whose cross set up the decisive moment.
The goal ignited a previously cautious contest, with both teams creating further opportunities in the closing stages. Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki forced a fine save, while teammate Matheus Nunes struck the post.
This FA Cup triumph marks City’s eighth in their history and follows their League Cup success in March, solidifying an impressive English cup double. The victory is particularly poignant for Bernardo Silva, the club captain who is set to depart at the end of the season. He described the win as “very special” and expressed hope that the team can still contend for the Premier League title, where they currently trail leaders Arsenal by two points with two games remaining.
For Chelsea, the defeat extends their disappointing streak to seven consecutive domestic cup final losses. The club, which has endured a turbulent season with multiple managerial changes, had hoped the FA Cup final would offer some respite. Despite chances from Enzo Fernandez, Joao Pedro, and Liam Delap, they were unable to find the net. Their hopes for European competition next season now appear slim as ownership seeks a new permanent manager.
