Jinja City has a new leader at its helm. Mayor Abdulhafidh Nagaya was officially sworn into office on Friday, May 15, 2026, vowing to prioritize the fight against corruption and ensure greater accountability in the delivery of services.

Nagaya, representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM), took the oath alongside newly elected councillors. He acknowledged the significant governance and development hurdles facing Jinja City, stressing the need for transparent leadership and cooperation across political lines.

“I pledge to collaborate with all leaders, regardless of their political party affiliation, to meet the demands of the people of Jinja and ensure quality service delivery,” Mayor Nagaya stated in his inaugural address, highlighting corruption and land grabbing as major impediments to progress and public trust.

These concerns were echoed by Resident City Commissioner Salim Komakech, who revealed that his office receives over five land-related complaints daily, many involving illegal acquisition of public land. Komakech asserted a commitment to investigate these issues and revoke fraudulent titles, noting instances of individuals claiming ownership of road reserves and public spaces.

Former Jinja City Council Speaker Bernard Mbayo urged the new administration to foster teamwork and listen to councillors, emphasizing their crucial role in decision-making. Meanwhile, Jinja City Woman MP Sarah Lwansasula pledged to work with the new mayor despite political differences, underlining a shared responsibility to enhance service delivery and economic growth.

The new administration is expected to build on past achievements while addressing persistent challenges that affect the quality of life and economic potential of Jinja City. Leaders are called upon to unite in their efforts to foster development and restore public confidence.
