Kampala police have successfully thwarted an apparent robbery attempt targeting a mobile money agent, arresting five individuals in the process. The operation, initiated following a tip-off on May 15, aimed to intercept a group of suspects planning to ambush a victim transporting cash.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala, the suspects intended to carry out the robbery during a transaction in Wandegeya. “The suspects had reportedly planned to attack the victim during the transaction,” Kawala stated.
During the police operation in Wandegeya, two motorcycles, reportedly meant for the planned heist, were seized. Authorities believe one of the arrested suspects is connected to a string of previous aggravated robberies in the Kampala Metropolitan area, including incidents at Kitezi Hardware Shop, Gwanda Mall, and a Centenary Bank targeting.
In a related but separate operation, police and security agencies apprehended 37 other suspects in Kira Municipality, Kajjansi Town Council, and Kira Road Police Division. These raids targeted areas identified as crime hotspots, where suspects were allegedly congregating to use narcotics and plan criminal activities like burglary and theft. Marijuana and other illicit substances were reportedly recovered.
All arrested individuals are currently in police custody pending further investigations, fingerprinting, and potential prosecution as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance public safety in Kampala.
