A substantial Shs58 billion has been earmarked in the new 2026/2027 budget for the long-awaited renovation of Masindi General Hospital. This significant allocation is expected to address critical issues of congestion and poor service delivery at the facility, which serves over 300,000 people.
The Masindi District Council recently approved a Shs99 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year, with the hospital refurbishment forming a major part of the spending. Initially, the district had projected Shs35.4 billion, but supplementary allocations from the central government led to the increased overall budget.
The allocated funds will facilitate major renovations of existing structures, expansion of infrastructure, and general improvements to healthcare facilities. Masindi General Hospital, originally built in 1920, has faced persistent challenges including overcrowding, insufficient space, and deteriorating infrastructure.
Previous efforts to upgrade the hospital have seen setbacks, despite a parliamentary health committee recommendation for urgent action in 2022. The government had previously set aside approximately Shs50 billion for the project, which was intended to include civil works and medical equipment. While construction of staff quarters by the UPDF engineering brigade has begun, the main hospital refurbishment faced delays.
District officials, including Chairperson Cosmas Byaruhanga, expressed optimism that the increased funding will significantly enhance healthcare services and reduce the burden on residents who often travel to other districts for treatment. The investment is also seen as a move to bolster the district’s potential as a tourism hub, given its proximity to Murchison Falls National Park.
Leaders believe the project will lead to improved access to quality healthcare, better working conditions for medical staff, and more space for patient care. An additional Shs81.1 million has also been allocated under the health sector conditional grant for development.
Local residents and hospital management committee members have welcomed the news, anticipating that the upgrades will address long-standing problems and improve the overall healthcare experience in Masindi.
