Yoweri Museveni has officially begun his seventh term as President of Uganda, marking four decades since he and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) first came to power.
Museveni’s political journey began at the young age of 22, evolving from armed struggle against dictatorships to leading the nation. His rise to power in 1986 followed a path marked by his participation in the armed struggle and dissatisfaction with post-independence elections.
Key milestones in his presidency include the promulgation of the 1995 Constitution, intended to foster human rights and the rule of law. However, Museveni’s tenure has also been characterized by strategic political maneuvering to consolidate power, including constitutional amendments that removed presidential term limits in 2005 and later the age limit in 2017, allowing him to seek re-election beyond previous restrictions.
The NRM government’s period in power, while credited with relative national stability, infrastructural development, and an expanded role in East African politics, has also faced criticism. Concerns have been raised regarding controversial constitutional changes, limitations on freedoms, and the suppression of opposition activities.
For many younger Ugandans, Museveni represents the only leader they have ever known, highlighting a generational shift and a growing demand for new leadership. As he embarks on this latest term, questions about the future of Ugandan politics and the nature of a post-Museveni era become increasingly pertinent.
The critical challenges for Uganda moving forward will involve national unity, reconciliation, and ensuring a peaceful transition of power, regardless of when that transition ultimately occurs.
