Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has thrown his weight behind Jacob Oboth Oboth, the MP for West Budama South, for the coveted Speaker of Parliament role.

In a public statement shared via his X account on Friday morning, General Kainerugaba expressed strong confidence in Oboth Oboth’s capabilities. He described him as one of the most effective ministers within the current government over the past half-decade.

Kainerugaba specifically highlighted Oboth Oboth’s ministerial performance, suggesting it merits elevation to the Speaker’s office for the upcoming parliamentary term spanning 2026 to 2031. “He has been the best minister in our government for the past five years. I want to be the first to endorse him for Speaker of Parliament (2026–2031). God bless Hon. Oboth Oboth,” Muhoozi posted.

This endorsement arrives shortly after the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political organization linked to Muhoozi, reportedly withdrew its support for the incumbent Speaker, Anita Among. The PLU’s decision was reportedly influenced by corruption allegations leveled against the current Speaker.

Muhoozi’s endorsement is expected to significantly influence the forthcoming Speaker race, intensifying political scrutiny. Pundits are now keenly observing whether Oboth Oboth can secure the crucial backing of the National Resistance Movement’s Central Executive Committee in the lead-up to the parliamentary election scheduled for later this month.
