Mother's Day: Understanding the Origins and Dates of Celebration

Mother’s Day, a day dedicated to honoring mothers and the concept of motherhood, is observed with varying dates across the globe. While many countries, including Uganda, celebrate it on the second Sunday of May, its origins trace back to different movements and historical contexts.

The modern American tradition of Mother’s Day is often attributed to Anna Jarvis, who, after her mother’s death in 1905, organized the first Mother’s Day service in 1908. She envisioned a day for individuals to honor their mothers and express gratitude for their efforts.

However, the concept of a “mother’s day” in the United States has roots in earlier activism. Julia Ward Howe, a prominent activist, proposed a “Mother’s Day for Peace” in 1870, advocating for women to unite against war. This idea, while influential, did not gain widespread traction.

In many parts of the world, the celebration aligns with the American observance in May. This includes countries like Uganda, Canada, Australia, and several European nations. The specific date can shift each year, as it is typically tied to a Sunday within the month.

It’s important to note that while commercialization has become a significant aspect of Mother’s Day celebrations, its original intent was to foster deeper personal connections and appreciation for maternal figures. The day serves as a reminder to acknowledge and celebrate the profound impact mothers have on families and society.
