Justine Nameere, the recently sworn-in Member of Parliament for Masaka City, was apprehended by plain-clothed security operatives on Friday evening. The incident occurred as Nameere was concluding a celebratory motorcade through Masaka City following her swearing-in ceremony in Kampala.
Her convoy was reportedly intercepted by a white van on Circular Road. Eyewitnesses state that armed individuals ordered Nameere out of her vehicle, which she was traveling in with her husband, Hamza Kennedy Nsubuga. Nsubuga later described the event as an abduction, alleging that UPDF operatives were involved and identifying the vehicle used.
Nsubuga further claimed that the operation turned violent, resulting in three supporters sustaining gunshot injuries. He also stated that Nameere’s Special Forces Command guard was assaulted and disarmed. “I want to use this opportunity to tell President Museveni that his fighter in Masaka was abducted by the mafias who had planned to steal her victory in the elections,” Nsubuga told journalists.
Adding to the confusion, Nsubuga noted that police guards escorting the convoy disappeared under unclear circumstances as the operatives arrived. He managed to escape unharmed.
When contacted, the Southern Regional Police Spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, stated that the police command had no prior notification of the operation and that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
The arrest follows a period of public dispute involving Nameere, who had publicly criticized the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General, Daudi Kabanda, while defending Speaker Anita Among. This occurred shortly after a public warning from PLU leader Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
As of Saturday morning, Nameere’s whereabouts remain unknown, and no official statement has been released by security agencies regarding her detention.
