In a significant generational shift, 30-year-old Abasi Kizito of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been elected as the new District Chairperson for Lwengo. Emerging victorious in a closely fought contest, Kizito secured 21,670 votes, narrowly defeating his closest opponent, Joseph Lubega Bazonona of the NRM, who received 21,195 votes.

Kizito, a newcomer to elective politics, campaigned on a platform of transparency and accountability. He pledged that his administration would focus on fairness, eradicating corruption, and ensuring meticulous oversight of public finances, aiming to usher in an era of peace for the district.

Lwengo, established in 2010, has a history of unique leadership styles, including the controversial yet developmental tenure of former Chairperson George Mutabaazi. Addressing concerns about his age and experience, Kizito emphasized his educational qualifications and leadership potential, stating that the Ugandan Constitution permits young individuals to serve.

He acknowledged that his victory was unexpected for a first-time candidate but attributed his success to a “peace-first” approach that garnered support across party lines, even from some NRM members weary of local political discord.

Kizito inherits a district facing critical challenges such as water scarcity, deteriorating road networks, and the persistent issue of unspent funds being returned to the central government.

Outgoing Chairperson Ibrahim Kitatta, who vacated the seat to contest parliamentary elections, advised Kizito to build on existing progress and remain vigilant against corruption, cautioning that the new chairperson might face resistance from an NRM-dominated District Council. Kizito is set to be sworn into office on May 20 at the Lwengo District Headquarters.

This election marks a crucial juncture, testing whether youthful leadership and a commitment to accountability can effectively navigate Lwengo’s complex political landscape.
