Vessels Attacked Near Hormuz as Trump, Xi Discuss Iran Tensions
New attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz have heightened concerns amid stalled peace talks between Iran and the United States. Recent assaults on maritime traffic close to the Strait of Hormuz have underscored the volatile situation in the Persian Gulf, even as diplomatic efforts remain at an impasse. US President Donald Trump engaged in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the ongoing tensions with Iran, urging China to take a more proactive stance in resolving the crisis.
Following their meeting, both leaders reportedly agreed on the importance of maintaining open passage through the Strait and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. China, a significant purchaser of Iranian oil, is seen by the US as having a crucial role to play. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confidence that China would act in its own interest to facilitate the reopening of the vital waterway.
However, peace talks have faltered, with both Iran and the United States firm on their initial demands, which each side considers non-negotiable. Iran has largely restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz since a US-led bombing campaign began two and a half months ago, severely disrupting global energy supplies. While the US suspended its bombing campaign last month, it has since imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
In the latest incidents, an Indian cargo vessel was sunk off the coast of Oman. Separately, “unauthorised personnel” were reported to have boarded a ship anchored near the UAE’s Fujairah port and were directing it towards Iran. This area is critical as Fujairah is the UAE’s sole oil port not requiring passage through the Strait.
Despite the escalating tensions, Iran appears to be negotiating passage agreements with some nations. Tankers from Japan and China have recently traversed the strait, with reports suggesting a deal for some Chinese vessels to pass under agreed terms. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed a significant increase in vessel crossings since Wednesday evening, though still far below pre-conflict levels.
The United States and Israel had paused their bombing campaign to facilitate peace talks, but progress has been minimal since a single round of discussions last month. US objectives included dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and reducing its regional influence, goals that remain largely unmet. Iran, meanwhile, seeks the lifting of sanctions and war reparations.
During his visit to China, President Trump aimed to secure Beijing’s cooperation in persuading Iran to cease its current activities in the Persian Gulf. The US has conveyed that any support for Iran could negatively impact bilateral relations.
