As Uganda witnesses the formation of a new government following the 2026 General Election, veteran politician Ruth Nankabirwa has spoken out against the palpable anxiety gripping many politicians awaiting cabinet appointments. Nankabirwa, who has served in various capacities for over three decades, shared her perspective at a thanksgiving service for the newly sworn-in MP for Nakaseke South, Charles Nsereko Kauma.
Nankabirwa, a long-serving member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), acknowledged that many politicians are experiencing “sleepless nights” as they anticipate their roles in President Museveni’s new term. However, she stressed that her extensive career and commitment to public service have instilled a sense of fulfillment that prevents her from succumbing to panic during these transitional periods.
“Politicians should learn to thank God, trust Him, and serve diligently to avoid falling victim to uncertainty,” Nankabirwa advised, drawing from her own experiences. She highlighted that integrity and a focus on service delivery, rather than personal gain, are crucial for longevity and peace of mind in public office.
During the event, religious leaders also offered guidance to the new MP. Archbishop Samuel Kajoba of the Adventist Church urged leaders to view their positions as a divine trust, emphasizing the need for God-fearing leadership and avoidance of worldly temptations. The call for principled leadership was echoed by Ministry of Finance Under Secretary Edward Damulira Ssengonzi, who encouraged constituents to leverage government projects for economic advancement.
The NRM’s strong performance in the recent elections, with President Museveni securing a significant majority, sets the stage for a renewed focus on improving citizens’ welfare. With the 12th Parliament commencing its work, Nankabirwa’s message serves as a reminder that a clean conscience and dedicated service are the best defenses against the uncertainties of political transitions.
