The recent Silverfin Pentathlon, held at Kampala International School of Uganda (KISU), received a welcome boost with the participation of Mako Sharks from Rwanda. The Rwandan team, comprising 16 swimmers, contributed to a more competitive atmosphere, despite a noticeable dip in the number of local participants compared to last year’s event.

The event struggled with lower numbers, particularly on Sunday when the older age groups competed. This is partly attributed to the impending third leg of the Uganda Aquatics National League. However, organizers were commended for their resilience in proceeding with the gala, especially considering some swimmers had switched to the new club, Imara.

Mako Sharks swimmer Jayden Ntwali expressed satisfaction with the competition, stating, “We are happy with the competition and we should have done better. We will work to improve and come back stronger next time.” Ntwali secured second place in the 13-14 boys’ age group, amassing 40 points.

Highlighting performances across age groups, Jaguar’s Shivon Nagginda led the 13-14 girls, while Aqua Akii’s Angela Busingye dominated the 15-16 girls’ category. In the 15-16 boys’ division, Orcas’ Elisha Karuhanga narrowly outperformed Mako Sharks’ Ryan Sheja Kabagema. Among the senior swimmers, Gliders’ Hanisha Katana topped the girls’ podium, and Baseline’s Victor Kimuli Ogenrwot claimed victory in the senior boys’ category.

The successful inclusion of Mako Sharks underscores the potential for international participation to enhance swimming events in Uganda. This event was covered by the Daily Monitor.
