A new report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) alleges that the M23 rebel movement and the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) are responsible for widespread human rights violations in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The report specifically focuses on incidents in the Uvira territory.

According to HRW’s findings, these abuses include 53 summary executions, eight instances of rape, and 12 enforced disappearances. The documented atrocities paint a grim picture of the conflict in the region and highlight the severe impact on the civilian population.

The report calls for accountability for those involved in these grave violations. The M23, a group with alleged ties to Rwanda, has been active in eastern Congo for years, contributing to instability and humanitarian crises.

This documentation by Human Rights Watch adds to growing international concern over the ongoing violence and human rights situation in the DRC’s eastern provinces. Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda)
