Women in Uganda are a formidable, yet often overlooked, force in the nation’s economy. They are establishing and expanding businesses across various sectors, from market stalls to digital ventures, demonstrating resilience and entrepreneurial spirit.
Data indicates that women own close to 40 percent of businesses in Uganda, with nearly one in three Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) being women-led. These enterprises, though often small, form the backbone of the country’s economic activity and provide crucial employment.
However, many women-owned businesses remain at the micro-level, with limited growth into medium-sized companies. Traditional support models that focus solely on financial transactions are proving insufficient. To truly foster their growth, a more holistic approach is needed.
Effective support involves combining financial assistance with practical mentorship, expert advice, and access to vital business networks. Recognizing that women entrepreneurs juggle not only business challenges but also personal responsibilities and uncertainties is crucial. Such integrated support can lead to stronger businesses and more directed growth.
The benefits extend beyond the businesses themselves, positively impacting families, communities, and the broader economy. Supporting women entrepreneurs is not just a matter of equality; it is an economic imperative that accelerates progress and ensures a more inclusive economic future for Uganda.
