Ankole Bishop Advises Museveni: Prioritize Integrity in New Term Appointments

Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa of Ankole Diocese has called upon President Yoweri Museveni to prioritize integrity and conduct thorough vetting for corruption when appointing individuals to his new government. The Bishop voiced his concerns following President Museveni’s inauguration for his seventh elective term.
Speaking at St. James Cathedral in Ruharo, Bishop Mwesigwa described corruption as an “endemic” issue deeply embedded in Ugandan society. He stressed the need for the President to employ wisdom, comprehensive background checks, and extensive research to identify incorruptible individuals who can drive socio-economic progress.
The Bishop expressed dismay over the consistent appointment of individuals with questionable reputations to significant positions. He highlighted that corruption among leaders is a form of spiritual ingratitude, given the extensive privileges leaders enjoy compared to ordinary citizens.
“When you are a leader, you are highly paid and enjoy more privileges than the average person. To be corrupt in such a position is to be ungrateful to God,” he stated, adding that such behavior sets a detrimental example, encouraging a cycle of vice.
Bishop Mwesigwa also addressed the challenges faced by children of clergy, noting that the recent conference aimed to equip them with resilience against public scrutiny and the pressures of being societal role models amidst rising immorality and drug abuse. He emphasized the importance of providing guidance and support to these youths.
