The initial agenda for Uganda’s 12th Parliament, following the swearing-in of its members, has been set. The Clerk to Parliament’s office has officially designated May 25, 2026, as the date for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
This election will constitute the very first order of business for the new parliamentary term, which is set to last for five years. The announcement was made by Mr. Peter Odeke from the Clerk’s office during a break on the first day of the MPs’ swearing-in ceremonies.
Several prominent figures are reportedly vying for the top legislative positions. Ms. Anita Among, who currently holds the Speaker’s seat and ascended to it after the passing of Jacob Oulanyah in March 2022, is seeking to retain her role. Contenders aiming to challenge her include Mr. Norbert Mao, Ms. Lydia Wanyoto, and Ms. Persis Namuganza.
Notably, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and Chief of Defence Staff, recently withdrew the movement’s endorsement for the incumbent Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Mr. Thomas Tayebwa, regarding their bids for the upcoming elections.
