The 12th Parliament of Uganda has officially begun with elected Members taking their oaths of allegiance and office. The ceremony, marked by a festive atmosphere with music and an enthusiastic turnout, formally ushers in the new legislative session.

The proceedings commenced with the playing of national and regional anthems by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Band. The Clerk to Parliament then read the official proclamation, citing the constitutional provisions that empower the administration of oaths to the incoming legislators.

Enos Asiimwe Kinywamachunda, representing Kabula County in Lyantonde district, was the first Member-elect to be sworn in. He took both the Oath of Allegiance, pledging faithfulness to the Republic of Uganda and to uphold the Constitution, and the Oath of Member of Parliament, promising faithful service to the House.

Several other members, including Jeje Ababakhar Odongo for Orungo County and Sylvia Alinaitwe Tumuheirwe, the woman representative for Rukiga district, followed suit. The swearing-in ceremony is a crucial step, constitutionally mandated, ensuring that each member is prepared to serve according to the law.

This significant event, which started on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, is set to continue through Friday, May 15, 2026. Ugandan citizens can follow the proceedings live on selected television and radio stations, as well as through the Parliament’s official social media channels.
