A groundbreaking AI-powered platform, named AI-POD, has entered its pilot phase, aiming to create a direct digital bridge between Ugandan engineers and the Japanese job market. This initiative, a collaboration between Ugandan firm Maarifasasa and Japan’s Akademia Co., Ltd., seeks to overcome the language barrier that has long hindered Ugandan tech talent from accessing international opportunities.

The AI-POD platform functions as a multilingual offshore software delivery tool, utilizing artificial intelligence for real-time translation, task management, and workflow reporting. This allows engineers in both Uganda and Japan to communicate and work in their native languages, minimizing the “lost in translation” issues often encountered when English is the sole intermediary.

This project is a significant component of the Uganda-Japan ICT Industry Promotion Project (UJ-Connect), supported by Uganda’s Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The pilot phase, which began on May 13, 2026, will run until June, with subsequent phases focusing on matchmaking Ugandan firms with Japanese offshore investors.

Robert Bob Okello, CEO of Maarifasasa, highlighted that AI-POD is envisioned as a long-term infrastructure for building trust and opportunity between Africa and Asia. He believes Uganda’s young and creative workforce possesses a distinct advantage, and the platform aims to position the nation as a globally competitive digital talent hub. Akademia Co., Ltd. has also encouraged the Ugandan government to explore replicating this model with other international partners, potentially creating thousands of offshore jobs for Ugandan youth.
