President Yoweri Museveni welcomed Gabonese President H.E. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to State House, Entebbe, for significant talks. Their meeting centered on advancing economic transformation, fostering industrial growth, boosting agriculture, and strengthening regional cooperation between their nations.

President Nguema extended congratulations to President Museveni on his recent inauguration, characterizing the event as a historic and “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” He praised Museveni as a “freedom fighter and a father for Africa” and acknowledged Uganda’s support in training Gabonese officer cadets, expressing willingness to send more for training.

The leaders also delved into the critical issue of oil refinery development and adding value to African resources. President Museveni emphasized the necessity for African nations to move beyond exporting raw materials, advocating for local processing to create jobs and wealth. He highlighted ongoing efforts to expand Uganda’s refinery capacity.

Gabon is actively pursuing agricultural self-sufficiency, with President Nguema noting a ban on chicken imports and incentives to encourage domestic production. He invited Ugandan farmers to collaborate in this sector, an offer President Museveni readily accepted, citing Uganda’s progress in processed products like coffee, tea, and dairy.

President Museveni shared Uganda’s economic strategy, which prioritizes commercial agriculture, ICT, manufacturing, and services, underscoring the importance of a supportive private sector. He recounted the positive impact of welcoming back the Asian business community to revive small businesses and factories.

Encouraging President Nguema’s reform agenda, Museveni drew parallels to Uganda’s long struggle against colonial domination, stressing the value of persistence. He expressed satisfaction that African leaders are now correcting past mistakes.

President Nguema pledged to continue adopting President Museveni’s vision for African self-reliance and economic empowerment, stating, “We are not afraid. We follow your ideas and we shall be strong.”
