Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has drawn parallels between Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions and a coin toss. Speaking ahead of his team’s match against Crystal Palace, Guardiola emphasized the need for his players to perform at a level that negates the impact of any controversial calls.
This sentiment comes amidst renewed scrutiny of VAR in the Premier League, particularly after a disallowed late equalizer for West Ham against Arsenal, a decision that could significantly influence the title race. Guardiola believes his team must focus on their own performance to ensure they are not unduly affected by officiating.
“The only thing we can do is do it (perform) better, that is only in your control,” Guardiola told reporters. He added, “I learned you have to do it better, be in a position to do it better because (if not) you blame yourself with what you have to do, because (VAR) is a flip of a coin.”
Manchester City currently trail Arsenal by five points but have a game in hand. Guardiola highlighted the importance of their upcoming fixtures, including the game against Crystal Palace, followed by matches against Bournemouth and Aston Villa.
