Ugandans Outline Hopes for Museveni's New Term: Focus on Service Delivery and Livelihoods

President Yoweri Museveni is set to commence his seventh term in office, a period many Ugandans hope will bring tangible improvements to their daily lives. Following his victory in the recent general election, expectations are high for a renewed commitment to addressing pressing national issues.

From the Busoga region to West Nile, the message from citizens is consistent: prioritize service delivery and economic empowerment. Concerns have been raised regarding the state of healthcare, the quality of roads, and the adequacy of public education. There is a call to reduce government expenditure, particularly on parliamentary operations, and redirect funds towards sectors that directly impact citizens, such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and job creation for the youth.

Specific concerns include the growing national debt and the need for better waste management in urban centers. Calls for intensified efforts to combat corruption and ensure proper accountability for public funds are also strong, with citizens demanding that public resources benefit the populace rather than a select few.

In addition to general service delivery, some regions are calling for targeted development initiatives. The Busoga sub-region, for example, seeks a special affirmative action program for development. Furthermore, there are appeals for the government to honor court rulings concerning war claimants and to increase support for religious institutions that contribute to social reform.

Education is highlighted as a crucial driver for economic progress, with demands for more teachers, improved school infrastructure, and adequate learning materials. The continuity of national development plans is expected, with speculation that Cabinet appointments might consider succession and long-term national strategy.

Local entrepreneurs and small-scale industries are also looking for support, recognized as vital for job creation and poverty reduction. The development of critical infrastructure, such as key road networks and bridges, remains a priority for enhancing trade and economic transformation in various regions.

Traders are hoping for the construction of modern markets to facilitate secure and organized business environments, while improved feeder roads are seen as essential for the efficient transport of agricultural produce.
