Suubi Community Schools, located in Mubende, Uganda, has been awarded the Inclusive Education prize in the prestigious $1 million Global Schools Prize 2026. This recognition, which comes with a $50,000 award and a special badge, highlights the school’s dedication to ensuring all children, regardless of their challenges, have access to quality education.
Out of nearly 3,000 nominations from 113 countries, Suubi Community Schools emerged as a top contender, placing it among the world’s most transformative educational institutions. The school is also a finalist for the overall Global Schools Prize, with the potential to win an additional $500,000 to expand its impactful work.
Founded by Daniel Sebugwawo, Suubi currently serves 570 students aged 5 to 19. The school is built on the conviction that every child possesses the capacity to learn. Its core methodology involves a structured catch-up system focused on foundational literacy and numeracy, utilizing continuous assessment to tailor individual learning plans. This personalized approach benefits students facing various difficulties, including reading challenges, attention deficits, language barriers, and trauma from interrupted schooling.
A unique aspect of Suubi’s model is its promotion of disability leadership, where students with special educational needs assume leadership roles in STEM, arts, and vocational projects. This initiative not only enhances student confidence but also challenges societal perceptions of disability, offering a replicable blueprint for other schools.
Furthermore, Suubi invests heavily in its teaching staff through regular training cycles, aligning with UNICEF and World Bank frameworks. Partnerships with organizations like Riverflow International and the implementation of a solar power system are bridging the digital divide, providing students with crucial technology access.
The school actively engages parents and the wider community, fostering dialogue and combating stigma, particularly for girls facing additional educational barriers. The $50,000 prize money is earmarked for enhancing teacher training, expanding the team to support personalized learning and special educational needs, scaling up STEM and vocational programs, and reinforcing after-school support sessions.
Suubi’s success demonstrates that inclusive education can thrive even with limited resources by integrating structured pedagogy, student leadership, professional development, technological access, and community collaboration. This Ugandan school is setting a powerful example for educational innovation on a global scale.
