As President Yoweri Museveni prepares to take the oath of office for his seventh term, security measures have been visibly increased in several parts of Uganda, though the situation varies significantly across different districts.
In Iganga, a substantial security presence comprising UPDF and UPF personnel is evident in key public areas like markets and taxi parks, with patrols on major streets and at critical roundabouts. Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha stated this increased deployment is a preventative measure against planned protests, citing intelligence reports of potential disruptions such as road blockades and tyre burning.
Conversely, Kigulu South MP-elect Andrew Kaluya has contested the necessity of this heavy deployment, suggesting it aims to stifle political activity and referencing past unprovoked police actions against opposition meetings.
Similar heightened security has been observed in Kapchorwa, with increased personnel along highways and at checkpoints like Kapteret on the Kapchorwa–Mbale road. Sipi Region police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang confirmed the move is intended to ensure public order during the national event.
In stark contrast, districts within the Teso sub-region, including Soroti, Serere, Kumi, and Amuria, have experienced no unusual security activity. Local leaders describe the situation as calm, with businesses operating as usual. Serere RDC Stephen Ekoom reassured that while security forces remain vigilant, the district is currently peaceful and enjoying normalcy.
In Fort Portal, NRM leaders organized public viewing events for the ceremony, with business activities remaining unaffected. Meanwhile, in Luwero, a significant number of NRM supporters and veterans departed for Kololo Independence Grounds to attend the inauguration, with others gathering to watch the event on large screens.
Despite the varied security outlook, many areas of Uganda continue their daily routines with minimal disruption, while supporters celebrate President Museveni’s re-election.
