President Yoweri Museveni’s commencement of his seventh term in office was met with contrasting public sentiment across the Lango sub-region on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

In Apac, celebrations were vibrant. Supporters adorned in yellow, the ruling NRM party’s color, took to the streets, dancing and participating in organized road drives. NRM grassroots mobilisers coordinated an evening entertainment event, signaling a significant display of support. Patrick Oruk, an NRM supporter, expressed pride in their collective effort towards this “victory.”

Others, like Alex Adimo, found joy in the perceived peace dividends, highlighting improved personal security and access to education for their children. Harriet Adoc shared similar happiness, anticipating the continuation of poverty-alleviation programs such as PDM and Emyooga, along with agricultural support.

Conversely, Lira City and surrounding Lango districts witnessed a notable lack of public celebration. The atmosphere was described as subdued, with no organized public gatherings or public displays of support.

Boda boda rider Bonny Omara voiced his disillusionment, stating there was “nothing to celebrate” given the perceived widespread poverty among Ugandans while some leaders enjoy apparent affluence. Farmer Sam Barker Okec from Oyam echoed this sentiment, questioning the basis for celebration.

The muted response in Lira contrasts with the region’s strong electoral performance for Museveni in the January polls, where he secured 84.49% of the votes cast in Lango, with Lira City leading at 85%. Nationally, Museveni was declared the winner with 71.65% of the vote, embarking on his seventh term since 1986.

The differing reactions underscore a divided sentiment within the Lango region as President Museveni begins his new term, highlighting the challenges of unity and reconciliation ahead.
