Four educators at Rukungiri High School have been taken into custody by local authorities for allegedly continuing to teach students during the ongoing school holiday.
The arrests were executed on Monday morning following an operation spearheaded by the office of the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
According to Deputy RDC Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, the teachers were apprehended while actively instructing students in classrooms. Ongom stated that the Ministry of Education and Sports has a clear directive banning lessons during holiday periods to allow both students and teachers adequate time for rest and non-academic pursuits.
“Holiday period should be strictly observed to allow learners and teachers time to rest, recharge, and engage in non-academic activities such that both can prepare themselves for coming terms with a fresh mind,” Ongom emphasized. He issued a stern warning that any teacher caught violating this directive would face arrest.
Police have withheld the names of the implicated teachers pending the conclusion of their investigation. Rukungiri District Principal Education Officer Jackson Turyahumura echoed the RDC’s sentiment, declaring the practice illegal and urging parents not to send their children for lessons during the break.
The Ministry of Education and Sports 2026 academic calendar indicates that the first term concluded on May 1, 2026.
