Ugandans noted the absence of First Lady Janet Museveni at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds during President Yoweri Museveni’s recent oath-taking ceremony for a new term. This marked the first time since the 1996 elections that “Mama” Janet Kataaha Museveni was not present at such a significant national event.

Her conspicuous absence triggered considerable speculation across the country and on social media platforms. Amidst the murmurs at Kololo, Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa of the Church of Uganda offered a public prayer for the First Lady’s health, stating that she had “healed and recovered,” which was met with applause.

Concerns about Janet Museveni’s well-being had been circulating for several weeks, with limited official communication from State House contributing to rumors. Retired Lt Gen Proscovia Nalweyiso had previously confirmed the First Lady’s illness but assured the public of her recuperation.

The lack of detailed information led to intense online discussions and misinformation, with one journalist arrested and charged for allegedly spreading false reports about the First Lady’s health.

Janet Museveni, who also holds the portfolio of Minister of Education and Sports, has been a consistent presence in President Museveni’s political career, including active support during the recent election campaign. Her absence at this milestone ceremony, solidifying her husband’s extended tenure, drew significant attention.
