Kampala buzzed with activity and heightened security on May 12, 2026, as President Yoweri Museveni took the oath for his seventh elective term at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. While traffic was light in the morning, numerous supporter groups converged on the venue, some accompanied by brass bands and vibrant chants.
Roadshows and mobile sound systems played celebratory music throughout the city, encouraging citizens to join the event, which had been declared a public holiday. Various organizations, including religious groups and transport federations, made their way to Kololo. By mid-morning, many NRM supporters arrived only to find the venue full, with organizers setting up external screens for those unable to enter.
The ceremony saw the attendance of at least 15 Heads of State and other dignitaries. Security was notably tight, with strict screening at all entry points. Vendors reported brisk sales of NRM-branded merchandise along the streets surrounding the grounds.
Despite the organized spectacle, some attendees experienced logistical challenges, including shortages of food supplies, with some provisions reportedly diverted. Security forces maintained a strong presence across the capital, ensuring order throughout the day.
Following his arrival, President Museveni inspected a military parade before taking the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office. A 21-gun salute honored the commencement of his new five-year term. The event concluded with aerial displays by the Uganda People’s Defence Air Force and police helicopters.
Supporters expressed hopes for improved service delivery, job creation, and enhanced public services during this term. In contrast, the election results, which showed Museveni securing 71.65% of the vote amidst reports of technical glitches and an internet blackout, were rejected by his main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi.
Elsewhere, celebrations were observed in districts like Rukungiri, where supporters gathered to mark the occasion, while also calling for a stronger focus on combating corruption to foster national development. In other areas such as Lira City, the mood remained subdued with no public gatherings.
The swearing-in signifies the beginning of a term that will extend President Museveni’s rule towards five decades, a tenure that began with revolutionary promises and has faced increasing scrutiny over its longevity.
