Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has publicly stated that she has no intention of running for president in the 2031 elections, announcing instead her plan to retire from active politics.

During an address at the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) headquarters, Among described suggestions of her presidential ambitions as “rubbish.” She expressed contentment with her current role as Speaker, a position she did not anticipate attaining, and indicated that her political journey would conclude with her retirement.

Among’s denial echoes a historical trend among prominent Ugandan politicians who have often distanced themselves from presidential aspirations. This phenomenon has been observed with figures like former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa and ex-Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, who faced scrutiny and political maneuvering when succession talks arose.

Political analysts suggest that expressing presidential ambition in Uganda can attract unwanted attention and potential targeting. Some interpret Among’s statement as a strategic move to avoid such risks and maintain political stability, while acknowledging that her current high-profile position naturally lends itself to national visibility and influence.

Previous political figures, including former Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, have also issued denials regarding presidential ambitions amidst circulating rumors and political pressures.
