The National Unity Platform (NUP) has set May 14th as the deadline for individuals wishing to contest the upcoming Kalangala District Woman MP by-election. This special election is necessary due to the recent death of the elected Member of Parliament, Helen Nakimuli.

Aspiring candidates are required to submit their applications in person at the NUP party headquarters in Kampala. Party officials emphasized a rigorous selection process to ensure the strongest candidate represents the party and the people of Kalangala.

The family of the late Helen Nakimuli, fondly known as “Mama Kalangala,” has publicly endorsed her sister, Irene Nampala, for the position. However, Nampala, like all other aspirants, must still go through the party’s internal vetting and selection procedures.

Nakimuli passed away on April 19, 2026, following complications from surgery. Her victory in the January 2026 general election meant her seat needed to be filled before the 12th Parliament convenes in June.

The Electoral Commission has outlined a timeline for the by-election process, including voter register updates, nominations, campaigns, and polling day on June 24, 2026. NUP officials have stated they are prepared to ensure the integrity of the vote.

This by-election is crucial for Kalangala to have representation in the new Parliament, as Nakimuli had not yet been sworn in before her untimely death.
