The National Resistance Movement (NRM) of Uganda and South Sudan’s Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing political cooperation, regional integration, and socio-economic transformation.
The agreement was finalized in Kampala on Monday during a meeting at the NRM headquarters, attended by delegations from both parties. This pact underscores the deep historical, cultural, and economic ties between Uganda and South Sudan.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong highlighted the close relationship, referring to both nations as “one people in two countries.” He emphasized Uganda’s significant role as a trading partner and employer for Ugandans in South Sudan.
Dr. Paul Okol, the SPLM Secretary General, stated that the MoU formalizes a relationship built on shared liberation ideologies, unity, and regional cooperation. He described the visit as a solidarity mission with the NRM.
The agreement also focuses on developing human capital, strengthening party capacities for policy development, empowering women and youth, and improving inter-party communication. A joint committee is expected to be established to oversee and enhance cooperation.
The signing ceremony precedes President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, which is attracting numerous regional delegations to Kampala.
