Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, Namugongo has topped Makerere University’s recent pre-entry examinations for its Bachelor of Laws program, surpassing many established academic institutions. The results, released by the Academic Registrar’s office, indicate that Uganda Martyrs had the most candidates achieve scores of 50 percent or higher, with fifteen students now eligible for admission consideration.

Following closely behind was King’s College Budo, securing the second position with thirteen successful candidates. Seeta High School placed third with eight qualifiers, while Nabisunsa Girls’ School and Seeta High School, Mukono each had seven students pass the rigorous test.

The pre-entry exam is a mandatory hurdle for all prospective students at Makerere’s School of Law, designed to assess analytical and comprehension skills crucial for legal studies. This year’s exam, held on April 18, saw participation from students who had completed A-Level, diploma holders, degree holders, and mature-age entrants.

Beyond the number of successful candidates, Uganda Martyrs also recorded strong individual performance, with its top student scoring 66 marks. King’s College Budo’s highest scorer achieved 65, and Seeta High School’s best candidate scored 62.

While other schools like Mbarara High School produced the highest individual score overall with 72 marks, and St. Mary’s College Kisubi and Gayaza High School also saw strong top scores, the Namugongo-based school led in the overall volume of qualifying students.

More than 110 schools nationwide had at least one candidate score 50 percent or above, highlighting a growing breadth of talent across the country, not just concentrated in traditional central region schools.

Candidates who scored 50 percent and above have been recommended for admission consideration by the Admissions Committee, provided they formally apply for the Bachelor of Laws program through Makerere’s system. It is important to note that passing the exam does not guarantee admission. Dissatisfied candidates have a two-week window to submit appeals from the exam release date.

Makerere University implemented the law pre-entry exam as a quality control measure to ensure students can meet the demanding nature of legal education, a requirement not common among most other law programs in Ugandan universities.
