Families in Uganda’s Lango region are facing severe financial hardship due to the escalating costs associated with traditional funerals. The desire to provide a “befitting sendoff” for the deceased often compels grieving families to sell assets, borrow money, or sacrifice future security.
Stories are emerging of widows struggling to repay loans taken out for meat, drinks, and other provisions to feed dozens of mourners. The pressure to emulate wealthier neighbors’ lavish ceremonies means that even those with meager resources feel compelled to spend beyond their means, leading to a cycle of debt.
Community elders and leaders have voiced strong concerns, describing the situation as “madness” and a “poverty trap.” They argue that the focus on providing elaborate meals and other funeral expenses is diverting resources away from essential needs like education and leaving families destitute.
Some leaders are advocating for a return to simpler burial traditions, where mourners do not expect to be fed. They suggest that mourners should provide support to the bereaved family rather than expecting the family to bear significant expenses for their sustenance during the funeral.
This cultural practice, while intended to honor the dead, is increasingly seen as a cause of hardship for the living, prompting calls for change to protect families from financial ruin. The question remains whether these deeply ingrained traditions can be altered to safeguard the well-being of surviving relatives.
