As President-elect Yoweri Museveni gears up for his seventh term in office, a gathering of international dignitaries has begun arriving in Uganda. By Monday evening, multiple presidents and representatives from various nations had landed in the country to attend the official swearing-in ceremony.

Among the early arrivals were H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, and H.E. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, also made an appearance. Representing Algeria, Azouz Nasri, President of the Council of the Nation, led a ten-member delegation. Ethiopia’s President, Taye Atske Selassie, arrived alongside former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

Further international presence included Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda. The United States was represented by Mr. Nicholas Checker, Senior Bureau Official for African Affairs, who conveyed President Donald Trump’s participation. Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also present with Mr. Yazkuli Mammedov.

The ruling NRM party has extended invitations to numerous political parties across Africa and beyond, including South Africa’s ANC, Mozambique’s FRELIMO, and China’s Communist Party. Russia is also expected to send a government delegation. Invitations have also been extended domestically to ministers, members of parliament, civil servants, ambassadors, religious leaders, cultural leaders, and the general public.

Despite widespread invitations, some opposition parties have stated their intention to boycott the ceremony, citing concerns over the electoral process. Nevertheless, the NRM has confirmed that approximately 35 heads of state and government are expected to attend, with an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 attendees anticipated in total.
