Uganda is joining the United States in celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, an occasion marked globally by the Freedom 250 campaign. State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Okello Oryem, highlighted the enduring and cordial relationship between the two nations.
Minister Oryem commended the U.S. for its consistent assistance, particularly in Uganda’s health sector and during humanitarian crises. He noted the critical role played in addressing major health challenges like HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and hepatitis, as well as supporting Uganda’s large refugee population.
Beyond health, the minister acknowledged the strong security cooperation, emphasizing the U.S. contribution to building the capacity of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). This collaboration, he stated, has enhanced Uganda’s ability to respond to regional security threats.
U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, echoed the sentiment of deep cooperation, sharing observations from his travels across Uganda. He pointed to the impact of American initiatives in research, entrepreneurship, and education, exemplified by programs like the Fulbright Scholarship and joint efforts in combating disease outbreaks.
Ambassador Popp highlighted a recent five-year, $2.3 billion health Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2025 and the opening of a new American Center in Kampala in January 2026. He emphasized that the Freedom 250 celebrations are about shared values and future accomplishments.
The strong diplomatic ties, despite occasional disagreements, were reaffirmed, with both sides expressing pride in their partnership. The U.S. Ambassador also acknowledged Uganda’s upcoming role in co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as another avenue for strengthening international relations.
