It’s a familiar scene at many Ugandan social events: the person who arrives, or perhaps is already present, with a cough that announces their presence as much as their name. This individual, often oblivious to the discomfort their hacking may cause, has turned their cough into a signature.
Some develop a rhythm, using the cough as a dramatic pause before delivering a punchline or a particularly important point. It becomes a peculiar form of vocal punctuation, a brief but noticeable interlude in conversations and speeches alike.
While the origins of such persistent coughs can range from allergies to more serious ailments, in the context of social gatherings, it often becomes a running joke or a source of mild irritation for attendees. The constant clearing of throats and sniffling creates a backdrop that can detract from the main event.
Whether it’s a genuine ailment or a habit, the ‘coughing attendee’ is a character many Ugandans have encountered, adding a unique, if sometimes unwelcome, dimension to social interactions.
