Mothers across Uganda are being urged to embrace responsible parenting and play a more active role in the upbringing of their children. The appeal comes from Ms. Rebecca Alitwala Mubeezi, CEO of Becky’s Child Foundation, who highlighted the significant influence mothers have as a child’s “first teacher.”
Ms. Mubeezi stressed that after the immense sacrifices involved in pregnancy and childbirth, mothers should prioritize instilling proper values to prevent neglect, abuse, and mistreatment. She cautioned against “absentee parenting,” where children may become overly influenced by technology and detached from traditional moral guidance.
“As mothers, we need to stick by our children regardless of the situation. Let us not transfer hatred and anger to innocent children, and above all, stop using them as tools in adult conflicts,” Ms. Mubeezi stated.
The foundation’s CEO also emphasized the importance of discipline and responsibility, noting that a child’s rights should be balanced with their duties. She encouraged mothers to teach children to discern right from wrong, even in the face of peer pressure, and to instill values that foster growth into responsible adults.
Becky’s Child Foundation is dedicated to supporting vulnerable children, orphans, the elderly, and promoting women’s empowerment. The call for responsible parenting aligns with their mission to uplift and empower the younger generation.
