Medical professionals in Uganda are calling for physical exercise to become a mandatory component of school curriculums. This initiative aims to tackle the increasing prevalence of obesity and related health issues among students, which could lead to a significant burden of heart diseases in the future.

Data from the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) reveals that approximately 36 percent of learners across the country are obese. Experts warn that this trend not only heightens healthcare costs but also makes a generation vulnerable to preventable chronic illnesses.

Dr. John Omagino, Executive Director of UHI, has advocated for a government policy that requires all schools and public offices to allocate space for physical activities. He stressed that schools should be required to have such facilities before being granted a license, highlighting that some registered schools operate in unsuitable environments without adequate space for exercise.

Adding to the concern, Dr. Charles Oyoo, Commissioner for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of preventive health measures. He urged Ugandans to prioritize regular check-ups, balanced diets, and physical activity to safeguard against heart conditions and reduce the financial strain on the healthcare system.

According to UHI, a quarter of cardiovascular disease cases are associated with physical inactivity and poor diets, with other contributing factors including alcohol consumption, stress, and smoking. These conditions are a major cause of death in Uganda, with over 27,000 lives lost annually.
