The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has declared its readiness to participate in a national dialogue, emphasizing a desire for an honest and equitable process. This stance comes in the wake of what party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat described as a “fraudulent and incredible” general election that has undermined public trust in Uganda’s electoral system.

Amuriat, speaking at an FDC retreat in Buikwe District, stressed that any reconciliation initiative must be championed by the ruling government and founded on truth-telling, justice, and equal participation. “The kind of dialogue we want is honest dialogue where we go as equal partners, not subordinate partners,” he stated.

Despite receiving an invitation to President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for May 12th, the FDC has confirmed its absence. The party leadership views the ceremony as a celebration of an undemocratic process that they do not recognize.

“We are not going to be part of the celebration because there is really nothing to celebrate in a win that has been forced on the people of Uganda,” Amuriat explained. This position was reinforced by MP-elect Kaps Hassan Fungaroo, who confirmed that no FDC members would attend the event.

FDC spokesperson Richard Muyomba also raised concerns about the heavy security presence in Kampala and surrounding areas during the election period, questioning the need for such measures in a non-conflict situation. President Museveni is set to begin another term following the recently concluded general elections, which have been met with opposition concerns regarding their conduct.
