St Anthony Restaurant Expands Ambitiously, But Food Quality Lags Behind

St Anthony Restaurant, a long-standing favorite for traditional Ugandan cuisine, has recently unveiled a considerably expanded dining area on Lumumba Avenue. This upgrade promises to accommodate more patrons comfortably, but some diners feel the culinary experience and decor haven’t quite matched the ambitious new look.

The new section is described as a vast, warehouse-like space that currently lacks interior decoration, leading to a sterile and humdrum atmosphere. Expectations were high for a refreshed menu to complement the expanded premises, perhaps a buffet option at a competitive price point, but the menu largely remains the same.

During a recent visit, the matooke was noted as excellent, though it arrived lukewarm rather than piping hot, diminishing its appeal. The restaurant’s signature luwombos, while generous in portion and tender in meat, were found to be rather insipid in taste. Drinks, particularly juice, were deemed overpriced, with a glass costing Shs15,000.

On a positive note, the service staff were highly praised for their amiability and efficiency, with specific mention of a server named Rachel. The restaurant’s cleanliness, including the cloakrooms, was also highlighted as exceptional. St Anthony Restaurant is open daily from 8 am to 7 pm, serving breakfast and lunch.
