Kampala's Skies Roar: Understanding the UPDF's Sukhois Amidst Fuel Concerns

Kampala residents have recently become accustomed to the loud sounds of Sukhoi fighter jets performing aerial displays. These displays, coinciding with President Museveni's swearing-in, raise questions about aircraft capabilities and the strain on global jet fuel supplies. The skies over Kampala have recently been filled with the distinctive, high-pitched screech of Sukhoi fighter jets, drawing the attention of residents. These powerful aircraft, specifically the Sukhoi Su-30MK2s believed to be operated by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces-Air Force (UPDF-AF), were notably prominent during recent national ceremonies.

Uganda reportedly possesses six of these Russian-made Su-30MK2 jets, acquired in 2011 for approximately $740 million. Manufactured between 2000 and 2016, these 4.5-generation fighter jets are capable of speeds up to 2,100 km/h, powered by two AL-31F engines. Since 2022, the fleet has been maintained by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The signature, loud roar of the Su-30MK2s is characteristic of Sukhoi variants. This distinctive sound, attributed to the twin Saturn AL-31F afterburning turbofan engines, has been a frequent auditory presence in Kampala.

A significant consideration for these flights is the substantial fuel consumption. Each jet consumes around 10,200 litres per hour, with consumption increasing when afterburners are used for rapid acceleration, as might be expected during aerial demonstrations. While these jets prioritize payload capacity, their intense fuel usage occurs against a backdrop of a global jet fuel shortage.

The ongoing Middle East conflict has led to a doubling of jet fuel prices, with a barrel now costing between $150 and $200. This situation has prompted authorities, including President Museveni, to emphasize the judicious use of aviation fuel. Domestic airlines have already introduced surcharges, impacting the tourism sector. The intensive use of fuel for displays by the UPDF-AF jets in this context highlights the delicate balance between national security, ceremonial needs, and global supply chain pressures.
